DORMITORIUM: FILM DECORS OF THE QUAY BROTHERS
Designed and fabricated in the span of 2 1/2 weeks, this exhibition featured the exquisite miniature sets (décors) used for producing the stop-motion animated films of Stephen and Timothy Quay.
The gallery walls were wrapped in a dark velvety fabric to mask the outlines of the gallery space, drawing viewers into the intimate scale of the décor scenes. Tall poles pressure fit between floor and ceiling forested the room, providing the armature for signage, spot lighting, and a theater screen. Most of the decors came with their own internal lighting, which we supplemented with dramatic theater spots directed into the scenes or to cast long shadows along the floor. The exhibition text was projected onto the wall, and seating for the theater was a haphazard collection of chairs culled from the Parsons studios—casually referencing the Quay’s collecting of found objects in the creation of their work.
