RAVINE HOUSE

The house sits on a glorious, steep plot of land overlooking a nature preserve outside of New Haven. The approach is to a windowless single story, with grade falling to reveal both levels of the house on the opposite side. Despite this incredible situation, and floor to ceiling windows to the south, the interior plan treats the surrounding landscape as a distant and inaccessible image.

Substantial revisions to the entry level layout will ‘open up’ what was a labyrinthine plan of small divided rooms, creating large reconfigurable loft-like social spaces along the house’s most dramatic views. A new addition will contain the relocated kitchen, breakfast area, and informal den with immediate access to the outdoors.
