SUPERFLAT
The project was a gut renovation and third floor addition to a small workers’ house close to downtown Brooklyn, for a single woman with two teenage daughters.
To maximize the living space of a small footprint, the ground floor was opened up to be one large room with storage cabinetry separating out a hall. With a careful eye on a slim budget, the palette of materials and finishes were kept to an industrial minimum, combining the utilitarian with the occassional upscale finish or fixture to go beyond a simple DIY aesthetic.
A-B plywood was used for almost all millwork; the kitchen was laminated with canvas-reinforced phenolic; a stained square of fabric dye defines a dining area; and light fixtures were fabricated by MATTER. Cement board panels, employed as a rain screen, spaced off the new exterior walls. As in the interior, the old is left almost untouched, juxtaposing the worn and rough with an understated new.
