Initally developed as a competition schematic for the roof and wall system of the Woburn Library addition proposal, we took the opportunity of a storefront installation at the Hafele showroom to develop our orginal concept into a full-scale prototype. Produced in conjunction with a lecture and exhibition of MATTER’s work, Reading Matter displayed small models and media loops of our projects throughout a flexible wall system.
Comprised of prefabricated slats, spacers, and portholes, the ‘wall’s’ configuration is achieved simply by determining the range of tolerance required in each slat to accept maximum deformation in the field. The ‘portholes’ and spacers are held position by friction and gravity alone.
An invitatition to RE/build offered an opportunity to reconsider, recycle, and re/prototype, taking advantage of the sponsor Material Process’s collaboration and sophisticated means of production. In RE/Accumulation, the wall becomes free-standing, defining space rather than just highlighting an existing plane.
